1st Annual Art Book Swap 11th October - 27 November 2010
artSPACE durban is launching its first Annual Art Book Swap on the 11th October 2010. The Swap will run from Monday, October 11th at 10:00 a.m. and will continue until Saturday November 27th at 1:00 p.m.
The Art Book Swap is going to be a great reason to go through one's library and de-clutter the books that are no longer wanted or needed. Then bring those books to artSPACE durban and find new and other interesting books.
The Swap will and should be fun.
There are a few simple rules.
1. This is a swap: books cannot be bought or sold for money.
2. All books will be categorized in three categories: up to R50 = 1 point, R50 to R150 = 2 points, R150 and over = 3 points.
3. As you bring your books into artSPACE durban you will end up with a total number of points and which establishes your "buying power".
4. You may bring in more books and swap at any time during the swap period adding to or reducing your points.
5. We will only accept books in good and clean condition.
6. The only cost involved is our administrative charge of R5 per point on taking books out. No charge to bring books in, of course.
7. All points expire worthless on the closing date Saturday November 27th at 1:00 p.m.
8. All books not swapped at that time will be donated to local schools.
So, de-clutter and refresh your library. If nothing else for a short time you also have reduced the "to be dusted" space. And of course, swapping is healthy for your credit card and the environment!

Inspired by Clay and Print Garret Artists 31 May -19 June 2010
The Garret Artists, a group of artists who originally attended Jeanette Gilks’ drawing workshops, will be exhibiting jointly with Ceramics Southern Africa KZN in this exhibition, featuring lino prints that have taken this age old discipline to new levels. The participating artists are: Gloria Adams, Jane Bishop, Almut Booth, Mike Brightman, Ritha Fenske, Karin Greenwood, Estelle Hudson, Jane Leach, Renée Leslie, Lesley Magwood Fraser, Gail Milne, Cheryl Penn, Zelma Reuning, Angela Shaw, Janet Shaw, Mary Slack, Sally van Heyzen and Gill van Wyk.

Slices of Lives by Jeff Rankin 31 May - 19 June 2010
An exhibition of characters and places in a unique mix of woodcut prints and the blocks they are made from.
Originally from Durban, Jeff has exhibited widely since 1976 and is represented in numerous public and private collections. In 2009 he made the move from full-time arts educator to establish the Albatross Studio next to his home on the southern edge of the Wild Coast. Now able to commit more time and focus to his own studio work, he also offers private classes and workshops in printmaking, drawing and related areas.
Opened by Rick Andrew, Artist, Writer and Senior Lecturer in the Graphic Design Dept, Durban University of Technology.
Inspired by Clay and Print Ceramics SA KZN Regional Exhibition 31 May -19 June 2010
The exhibition showcases the best ceramics made by KwaZulu-Natal artists. The public will also be able to see work by students from various teaching studios in Durban.
Invited guest artists are well known Midlands potter Trayci Tompkins, creator of the Zulu-Lulu range of ceramics, 2009 Merit Award winner Maggie Matthews, well-known sculptor in clay Wendy von Varendorff and promising ceramic artist Lorrine de Richelieu. Do not miss this opportunity to see how artists express their thoughts and feelings in clay.

Landscapes, probably more than any other visual objects, remains a vital source of inspiration since every person, whether consciously or subconsciously, lives in a constant relationship with his or her environment.
Participating artists were invited to explore through the creative use of video any themes related to the geography, landscape and environment and to present their representations and feelings around the "environment-human-being-nature" theme.
The works express a deep appreciation for nature and its splendours and also reflect fears that these beauties may become degraded.
The objective of the exhibition was on the one hand to stimulate and encourage artists to use their abilities to formulate original and imaginative images with the help of video technology, and on the other hand, invite the viewer to savour the range of moods that landscapes evoke in the heart.
Included in the DVD is Georgia Papageorge’s magnificent
Africa Rifting - Lines of Fire, Namibia / Brazil,
video images of two grand installations inspired by a voyage commencing in Namibia in June 2001 and climaxing in Torres, Southern Brazil, on 11 September 2001.
