“Striking back: Gandhi and the Rebellions of 1913”

Opening talk by Dr. Ashwin Desai

Underhanded politics are not a recent development. Investigating the build-up to the strikes of 1913 involved all South Africans. From white railway workers striking in 1912, white mineworkers withdrawing their labour in 1913, 9,000 black workers striking for 3 days in 1913, and women marching from Johannesburg crossing over the border into Newcastle.

As a lead up to this exhibition the invited artists were involved in a visual presentation about the subject of the 1913 Strike with well-known authors and lecturers Dr. Ashwin Desai and Goolam Vahed.  The artists were also given a synopsis document, by Dr. Ashwin Desai and Goolam Vahed, expounding on the history of these strikes and Gandhi’s role.

This exhibition is intended to commemorate the 100 years since the 1913 strike in South Africa and also to highlight the history of this country and its relevance with politics today. The project will culminate in the publication of a book on the strikes in late 2013.

Phonography 2 - smartphone photography show

21 January – 9 February 2013

“Phoneography 2” – a group exhibition of smartphone camera images

Julie Mayo

Taking pictures with a smartphone (or a cellphone that has a camera) has become so popular, it even has its own name: iPhoneography, or smartphoneography for those who do not own an Apple mobile phone. Users have been taking a lot of cool pix on their phones and now would like others to see them besides on Instagram and other sites and have a chance to sell them in a gallery environment.

We coined the term "phoneography" to open the field up to all cellphone with cameras users.

The blocks are either 12x12cm or 12x24cm this year. And there will be a prize for the most voted for piece on show of R500.

Some of the participating artists are:
Lanel van Vuuren, Julie Mayo, Darin Dickson, Christeen Grant, Samantha Vincent,
Nicola Savage, Jody Simpson, Andrea Wyse, Nick Rose, Craig Hatting, Claire Birtwhistle, Amy Molony,
Janien Smythe, Leanne Frisinger, Patrick Royal, Doug Mattushek,

Bits and Pieces by Gerald Baise

Reclining Figure
This exhibition is Baise's second at artSPACE durban and once again involves Baise’s fascination with wood -
laminating, chiselling, rasping, sanding and deconstructing.  Simply shapes without philosophical import that is pleasing to the viewer and engender a desire to touch and feel the wood.

Biography: Gerald Baise studied with the late Basil Jones for several years and has had 5 previous sculpture
exhibitions.  He works almost exclusively in wood both indigenous and imported. The main focus is on simple shapes manipulating the wood to achieve this with little emphasis on the grain.
Exhibitions close on 26 May at 2:00pm
