"Letters from the Sky" 28 November - 14 December
Forty international artists join forces in ‘Letters from the Sky’, an international experimental film festival for COP17.
In the coming weeks, the globe’s attention will be focused on Durban, South Africa, where world leaders will converge to discuss the most pressing matter of our time - climate change - at COP17.
Launching on the 28th November and running until early 2012, experimental film festival, ‘Letters From the Sky’, will take to our screens as part of the COPART Cultural Action. The festival, curated by Cape Town based Kai Lossgott, will showcase a series of film messages from artists and filmmakers from all over the world. The artists were briefed to present personal responses to the effects of climate change on their communities, families and lives.
The festival has been supported by the British Council as well as the City of Cape Town’s Climate Smart Programme.

The End (Of The World As We Know It) 7 - 26 November 2011
Opening talk by Andre Cronje, environmental journalist,
filmmaker and presenter of 50/50.
The exhibition brings together 32 invited artists who each
present one work interpreting what is an extremely difficult, thought provoking
and exciting subject matter.
In the run up to this exhibition the two galleries organized
evening sessions, In Session.End.Part 1, 2, and 3 on this subject matter in
which religious leaders, environmentalists, philosophers, physicists,
mathematicians (to name a few) were given the opportunity to give their take on
it.
The artists who have accepted the invitation to this
exhibition have had to consider and develop not only a very abstract and
technical matter but also a very personal and emotional one and are now faced
with the challenge and burden to consciously present them to the public. Each
work is displayed with the artist's statement about the work.

“Juxta Poses” - Terri Broll 17 October - 5 November 2011
In this exhibition Terri Broll explores the way in which the juxtaposition of images without a socially predictable order can invite a deeper exploration of the relationship between self and other and the fantasy that connects them. Oil, wax and photo collage are used to produce an image with both layering and ambiguity.
“Hope...you can trust always” by Celia Sidler 17 October - 5 November 2011
The focus of Celia Sidler's work is the aesthetics and influences of the food and publicity industries. The effects of globalisation on local markets and the role of publicity in influencing consumption are ever-present in her projects, which typically involve found objects. Whilst in South Africa, she will focus mostly on new inspirations drawn from her encounters with new people, food, animals, and material objects.
For the opening Sidler has organised an Indian family, who will cook mealies, so everybody is invited to come and to eat. It’s also one part of her show, it belongs to it, so it's not just an opening meal, it is an action.

"Migration" by Floris van Zyl, Cally Lotz, and Sue Physick 8 - 27 August 2011
A show of (the latest) contemporary works by 3 local artists at Durban’s artSPACE durban. Floris Van Zyl, Cally Lotz, and Sue Physick will present an exhibition of conceptualized mixed media artworks entitled Migration.
It will be the first opportunity for the public to view works presented by these 3 artists together in one exhibition. With familiar elements in each work, Migration will present a story of a physical, spiritual and historical journey.

Bolter’s art is autobiographical, biographical and metaphorical for
deliberate or accidental cutting. It can be representative of
microscopic neural imaging, or the abstraction of his universe. It
remains true to abstraction in that it is very subjective and can be
positive or negative for the viewer. Cutting is not always
perfect, especially when perfection is what you are aiming for with a
cut. You can approach a perfect image or state and can get something
different and improved on what you intended.

"Playoff" by Lance Friedlande and Gordon Froud 18 July - 6 August 2011
The exhibition PLAYOFF calibrates the individuality of the creative process, highlighting similarities and differences between the activities practiced by both artists to produce their work. Similarities include: using creativity to resolve self generated problems, the use of words to stimulate content, an evolutionary process in the method, and the practice of setting up an ongoing dialogue between the artist and the work which influences the outline. Also important for both artists is finding joy in the creative activity resulting at times in playfulness in the process as well as in the completed artwork.
In spite of these and other process similarities, the works of the two artists remain very different and offer a duality or Play-off against each other that makes the exhibition work well as an interesting two person show. This exhibition has travelled from Potchefstroom University to Oliewenhuis Museum in Bloemfontein, will be shown at artSPACE durban before finishing its run at the Pretoria Art Museum from October to December 2011.

“Onthaal Onthul” by Naretha Pretorius 27 June - 16 July 2011
'Onthaal Onthul' is both an invitation to a function/reception/celebration (onthaal) as well as the artist revealing (onthul) critical aspects of this function/reception/celebration the audience is attending. The artist provides analogies and conceptual frameworks by using tea-serving utensils to represent and address various social conducts, concerns and conforms.
The exhibition forms part of her Masters studies in Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology, where she applied an auto/ethnographic and living theories study under the supervision of Professor Joan Conolly and co-supervision of Bronwen Vaughn-Evans.

"a history of my life in 100 objects" by Louise Jennings 6 - 25 June 2011
Some of us surround ourselves with things, objects… our possessions. This exhibition is a documentation through paint and clay of the things that forms part of Jennings’ history. They hold a comfortable link with the past….to people and places. The paintings and installations contain a concentrated stillness and inexhaustible presence… they are moments of mental and spiritual mindfulness.
"Anatomy of the Un-seen" by Grace Kotze 6 - 25 June 2011
The “Anatomy of the Un-seen” is an exploration into the notion that the unseen can manifest in the physical. The internal “soul” of a person never goes un-seen, posture, muscle development, voice tenure, expression in the eyes etc. are some of the physical traits that describe the un-seen. This notion strongly resides in the portrait, bewitching in its potential to hold emotion.
The exhibition showcases a selection of faces that provided Kotze with strong clues into the un-seen. More specifically, they were faces that held true to her emotional state at the time of producing the works.

“PERENNIAL” – Garret Artists Exhibition in conjunction with Ceramics SA KZN Regional
The name “Perennial” reflects the growth of the Garret Artists Drawing Group year after year. The group was started by Jeanette Gilks in 1989, and after her retirement from Garret Artists 2 years ago, they have continued to work together on a weekly basis using Jeanette’s techniques and methods.
After a very successful exhibition with Ceramics SA in 2010, Garret Artists have once again been invited to exhibit in 2011, showing their innovative and exciting work from the past year. They have been exploring local architecture, dressmakers’ forms, landscape, Cubism and botanical life.

"Inspiration" - Durban Art Gallery Archive Show 28 March - 16 April 2011
A group of KwaZulu-Natal-based artists met on December 9th at the Durban Art Gallery archives with the formidable task to find the one artwork that was most inspirational to each of them. At the end of the day twenty-five artists came away with twenty-five images that have now become their foundations of a new artwork. There were no restrictions as to the subject matter chosen nor are there any restrictions as to the interpretations. The exhibition will showcase both images of the original artworks and the interpretations.
